In May of 2019 the American Diabetes Association (ADA) published in their journal, Diabetes Care, an update to the 2014 iteration of their nutrition recommendations. ADA Scientific Sessions (#ADA2019): Loads of Learning, Connecting and Recommitting

I wrote this invited guest blog for the American Association of Diabetes Educator’s (AADE) blog after attending the 2019 American Diabetes Association’s (ADA) Scientific Sessions (as they're called) in June. As usual this conference was packed with four days of intense learning. It also offered an opportunity to connect with many old friends and colleagues as well as with many healthcare providers, people with diabetes and others committed to improving diabetes care and the lives of people with diabetes. The slide above was created by Professor Jane Speight from Australia. She graciously revised this slide for me to share with my AADE colleagues in this blog. She used the initial draft of the slide in her talk at ADA on #languagematters which I recapped in this blog. She's a global champion on this topic.

#ResolutionRealism

On January 27th I was again a guest on Diabetes What to Know’s Facebook Live Diabetes Primetime with host Ansley Dalbo. On this episode we focused on what we called #ResolutionRealism – how to make and follow through with those annual New Year’s resolutions realistically. I detailed why I promote preplanning as a critical part of healthy food choices and eating habits (in addition to portion control). I shared the action steps I take week after week to make this happen for myself and my family.

Is It Time to Remodel Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support?

Diabetes Self Management

This invited commentary for the American Journal of Managed Care – Evidence Based Diabetes Management, was published as part of a special issue titled: Diabetes Educators and Payment Reform. In this provocative article I build the case for the need to remodel for the future the way that Diabetes Self-Management Education and Support (DSMES) is delivered today. I detail the societal trends driving the need for this action along with the aligned research, standards and recommendations.

Facebook Live at AADE18 – The Diabetes Educator’s Role in Advocating Peer Support

I had the privilege to do a Facebook Live at the 2018 American Association of Diabetes Educator’s annual conference with David Edelman, founder and CEO of Diabetes Daily. We’ve been partners over the last year working with AADE and Peer Support Communities to promote the value of peer support to people with diabetes and their caregivers.
